This is due to the lack of a support system for their community, the misconception that they can understand Spanish, and the fact that most information is communicated by hearing. This affects everything from access to public transportation and the health care system to cultural activities and interactions with others in daily life. Furthermore, stereotypes about deaf people persist, especially in more vulnerable communities. These are major factors in making deaf people feel excluded and separating their community from others. Color Tone aims to reduce this sense of marginalization and community separation felt by deaf people in Costa Rica, and to enable them to share their feelings through common experiences with the hearing community, answering the following&nbsp;question: how might we create an inclusive environment by&nbsp;bridging the gap between the deaf and hearing people and reduce&nbsp;the barriers of accessibility? WHAT IS COLOR TONE? It is a set of tools for people who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience the physicality of sound. It allows them to access sound and the information through sight and touch. They can also use it with others who rely on hearing and share the experiences and feelings with them. This experience is embodied by enabling access to sound, giving a new creative outlet for self-expression, encouraging shared experiences and new ways of communicating, and empowering people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The two main components are a portable device that translates sound into vibration and colors which allow people to learn the difference between each sound in a non-auditory way, and a music production tool that allows them to create music using the colors and tactile sensations. I hope that this project will help spread understanding of deaf people, enable hearing people experience how deaf people perceive the world, and create a connection between them. While the sounds of cars and bicycles keep us safe when crossing the street, the sounds of nature and music enrich our lives. In the absence of sound, what would we rely on for our daily lives? My design process included immersive research, observational research, online surveys, in-depth interviews, and co-creation workshops with the local deaf community in San Jose, teachers for special education, hearing people and music therapists. I began with a silent walk in the city. My first realization of how much I rely on sound in my daily life happened as I walked around the city with earplugs. I also realized how unnoticed the deaf people are in the street. A lot of my time was spent with the deaf community as well, being part of their everyday life, and taking them out into nature to observe how they communicate with each other, with hearing people, and how they use their senses in nature. Through interviews and co-creation workshops, I learned that deaf people want to connect with others outside of their community through direct and intuitive communication, instead of relying on slow interpretation all the time, and that they enjoy music by feeling the vibrations, dancing, and singing in sign language. I was empowered by their pride in their deaf culture and their deep and beautiful sign language, which led me to create something that would allow them to feel connected to hearing people while using music as a means of communication. I spent several weeks refining the prototypes from lo-fi to hi-fi, testing with deaf communities and sound experts. The design decisions were made based on their feedback, including the output of sound to other senses, the variation of scales, and the colors and shapes of the tools. In order to get more people’s experiences with music, I conducted an online survey. Deaf people enjoy music by feeling the vibrations, dancing, and singing songs in sign language.&nbsp; KEY INSIGHTS 🧑‍🤝‍🧑&nbsp;INCLUSIVENESS In Costa Rica, deaf people often feel left out, especially when there are a lot of hearing people in the room and the conversation focuses on speaking. Even on the street, people often feel uncomfortable when they are spoken to because people are not aware that they are hearing-impaired, and are mistakenly thought to be ignoring them. “The memorable moment was when I got involved”. 🚌&nbsp;ACCESSIBILITY In Costa Rica, access to information for the deaf is limited. It is because most information relies on hearing. When using public transportation, going to the hospital, or watching TV, there is still very little visual information available, and the services of interpreters are not well developed."Hearing people don’t care about us”. 👁&nbsp;VISUAL INFORMATION For deaf people, the ability to obtain information visually is even greater than for those who can hear. And their desire for visual information is very strong. However, since their vision is particularly sensitive to compensate for their hearing, a lot of visual information can become noise to them. “If we had more visual-based information, our lives would be much easier”. “I go to mountains because the city is very distructive and tiring (visually)”. 🧏 COMMUNICATION Sign language is the primary language for deaf people, whereas the hearing individual uses Spanish. This language barrier hinders communication between deaf people and hearing people. Also, common misconception that deaf people in Costa Rica receive is that they all understand Spanish. For them, learning a soundless alphabet takes more effort than it does for hearing people learn a language, and more than we imagine, a lot of deaf people cannot understand Spanish.“Maybe they cannot communicate without aid or sign language”. “I will use text app on my phone to communicate.” 🤝 SHARED FEELING Deaf people recognize that their world is different from hearing people. Many of them wished that there was a society where they could communicate more smoothly and connect with hearing people.“I wish there were more cultural activities availble that both deaf and hearing people can participate together”. In co-creation workshops and other activities, however, I found out they did not see the value in such slow communication. They wanted to connect with hearing people in a more direct and intuitive way. Their pride as deaf people, deep culture, and beautiful sign language also inspired me. In response, I wanted to do something that would enable them to feel connected to hearing people by using music as a mode of communication rather than giving them a new aid. How might San Jose become synonymous with the Costa Rican identity of regenerative tourism into the city while retaining its cultural and historical heritage? It’s a way to highlight the sustainable businesses and attractions within the city, that focus on social, economic, and environmental developments.The Sloth Passport includes a map with all of our partners and attractions of the city, providing people the most complete and sustainable guide of San Jose. When they visit these locations, they’ll receive a stamp in return. We have designed a variety of recommended routes for them to explore, each encompassing a combination of culture, art, nature and gastronomical experiences. People can combine and decide their own path and pace. The Green Street Award is presented to the most clean and green streets of the city, encouraging businesses and citizens to work together as a community to clean and beautify their area. We believe that the city can develop sustainably over time and create a positive impact with efforts of both the local communities and tourists. We had a series of conversations about how to make the city attractive and inviting to walk around, and how design can lead to that. We hoped that design would encourage many stakeholders in the city work together to achieve the same goal of development of San José. People were made to live in their own bubbles, with little interaction with others. This project explored new ways to connect people’s worlds together. The experience is intended to leave people with a sense of belonging by leaving their own constellations in the sky as a repository and sharing a virtual stargazing experience with others. The platform is created with minimal interactions to simulate how people might typically stargaze with a group in-person. When the user click a button and see a myriad of constellations that they never thought they’d see, it reminds them that there are people, that there is something in the universe, and that sense of discovery makes them realize that they are part of a larger world. In the process of iteration, we stripped away the direct interactions, such as conversations that can happen between people. Instead, we kept the interaction to a minimum - just by creating a constellation, naming it, and stargazing it together. We believe that acknowledging others not only creates a deeper connection between people, but also expands your world. When you click a button and see a myriad of constellations that you never thought you'd see, it reminds you that there are people, that there is something in the universe, and that sense of discovery makes you realize that you are part of a larger world. An important part of our design process was having people to communicate on a deep emotional level. During the iteration process, we stripped away direct interactions, such as conversations, that could occur between people. We kept the interaction to a minimum: creating constellations, naming them, and stargazing together. While replicating the actual act of stargazing, we also believe that meaningful experiences will lead to deeper connections between people, even if that is minimal interaction. This also helped us move as a team and allowed us to have productive and meaningful conversations on a daily basis and keep the project moving forward without burning out. PROJECT DEVELOPMENT (FEB 2022 -) My next step was to create a new prototype using Unity. In-person reunions between immediate and extended family and friends are commonplace. Virtual engagement is also a fundamental part of their weekly social interaction using social media and messaging applications to share stories, articles, and conversations. As a fast developing country with a growing culture for use of technological platforms, some family traditions are changing in order to encompass a more modern and city-centered lifestyle. Due to this, family stories that are told in an oral way, may be neglected and disappear with time. What if the reunion of modern Costa Rican families was marked by a ritual of oral storytelling? WHAT IS TANGIBLE STORY? Tangible Story is a set of devices which encourages the traditional oral storytelling and inspire contemporary families to think about the way we communicate today and to deepen their connection with their families.A light pattern signals the arrival of a new story. A person can push in the center of the device to hear the recorded memory, which will be deleted after it is played. The decision of letting the story fade away or preserving it by re-recording it into their own transmitter and re-sharing it, relies entirely on the family member. Recorder is meant to be kept at home for use whenever a family member wants to share a story. They can record them and it will be uploaded to a cloud repository. We believe that by allowing families to keep their stories circulating and alive, they are creating an inheritance for their future generations. In today’s society, our relationship with technology is based on immediacy. We expect both fast responses from our technology and technology expects fast responses from us. This has also come to play in the way we communicate with loved ones since the majority of our communication platforms are based on those same fast feedback loops. Reading stories aloud is a great way for children to wind down for the night, bond with their parents, and expose them to new ideas. However, most kids typically choose a handful of books that are continuously read every night. What if there was a new way of storytelling where the children and parents could create their own storybook? WHAT IS STORE.Y? Store.y was created to help spark the kids’ imagination by creating their own story. It’s a new way of storytelling that uses audio recognition to capture and is then translated into a visual storybook. It is also a window into human nature and their culture. The world is full of words that cannot be translated into other languages that reflect such human nature and culture. An aim for this project was to create an emotional, engaging and inspiring interactive story of words in the world. WHAT IS ONE MILLION MILES? One Million Miles is an interactive app with three chapters in which players can discover words from different countries and their meanings, while receiving haptic feedback and illustrations. The first chapter is based on the theme of departure and explores the untranslatable Japanese words of sentimental, ephemeral and fleeting. The theme for Chapter 2 is journey, and the player explores the untranslatable words of love, friendship, and happiness in the world. In the final chapter, home, the player becomes acquainted with the disappearing words in the world of nostalgia, home, and life. This interactive app did not only seek to design a pleasant, smooth and discoverable graphical user interface, but also to create a narrative that leverages the interactivity and allow the player to My responsibilities ranged from foundation research to create new concepts for the future, to user testing to improve and add new features to our product. Foundational research included online research and in-person visits to households' kitchens to conduct in-depth interviews, workshops, focus groups to find out the needs of the current/potential Cookpad users. For product research, I was responsible not only for conducting online and offline user testing to extract insights and problems, but also for incorporating them into design by creating wireframes, testing, refining and shipping.
